St. Louis Cathedral, at the head of Jackson Square, is in the background. The current cathedral, completed in 1851, is on the site of earlier churches, built in 1727 and 1794. Jackson Square is in the heart of the French Quarter, the oldest part of the city, and the hub of New Orleans's tourist trade.
